Teacher candidates in the International Baccalaureate educator stream have an interest in an international education that is concept-based, inquiry-driven, and student-centred. You’ll be guided by key concepts and transdisciplinary themes and enjoy enriching, hands-on learning opportunities that promote discovery, exploration, and thinking about real-world issues.

What you'll learn
UBC’s BEd degree is globally recognized, and open to international students. The IB Educator stream is for teacher candidates with an interest in an international education that is concept-based, inquiry-driven, and student-centred. Guided by key concepts and trans-disciplinary themes, teachers create enriching, hands-on learning opportunities that promote discovery, exploration, and thinking about real-world issues.
Teacher candidates who successfully complete the requirements for the International Baccalaureate stream of the BEd program are recommended to the BC Teacher Regulation Branch for a professional teaching certificate and are eligible for the Level 1 International Baccalaureate Educator credential.
Experiential learning
Inquiry
All Ä¢¹½´«Ã½teacher candidates participate in an inquiry seminar in each of the three terms on campus, developing the habit of asking critical questions about their pedagogical decisions and practices.
Practicum
The practicum includes a full day in schools each week starting in September or October, followed by a two-week school placement in November, which is also the setting for the 10-week extended practicum in the spring.
The teaching practicum is an exciting part of the Bachelor of Education program because it is the time when teacher candidates put theory into practice alongside an experienced teacher.
Community Field Experience (CFE)
Following successful completion of a school-based extended practicum, all teacher candidates participate in a three-week Community Field Experience.
Some field experiences take place in a school context that is very different from the extended practicum site, and others take place in non-school-based contexts such as museums, science centres, environmental ed camps, Indigenous communities, daycares, and more.
Program advantages
Ä¢¹½´«Ã½has Canada’s only IBO-recognized International Baccalaureate teacher education program. Professional learning and development is supported throughout the program, including professional learning sessions with special guest educators. Teacher candidates receive an IB Certificate in Teaching and Learning for the Primary Years Programme, Middle Years Programme, or Diploma Programme in addition to the Bachelor of Education degree and BC teaching certificate.
Outcomes
Many Ä¢¹½´«Ã½BEd alumni go on to teach in local public and independent schools, while others decide to venture beyond BC’s Lower Mainland to teach in rural or international locations. The concept of an educational setting is far reaching, and many alumni find careers in non-school-based contexts (i.e. arts organizations, science centres, non-profit organizations, etc.). Ä¢¹½´«Ã½BEd alumni include the Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau, Juno-nominee and children’s entertainer Will Stroet, along with multiple school administrators, writers, and leaders in education.
